It’s time to kick off our 9th Annual Christmas Giving efforts. THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE GENEROUS DONORS and your continued support for this program year after year; service to our local Community is a key tenet in the Alumni Association and Club membership activities!

Total cash donations were approx. $5700 (63% higher than previous year!); additionally 9 ND Club members adopted local families (46 individuals) for holiday support. We supported 50 families with food baskets and gift cards at two schools in eastern Omaha. Our Alumni ‘adopted’ 25 families (62 children and parents) through Assumption Guadalupe Catholic School and the Grandparents support program at the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging (ENOA). We also purchased approx. $1500 worth of cold weather clothing, blankets, and hats/gloves/scarves, etc. for the Siena/Francis House homeless shelter and Assumption school donation center. General donations of toys, sheet sets, towels, bus passes, grocery gift cards and dozens of toys for Christmas given to needy families through the ENOA, Salvation Army, and Siena/Francis House.

Events Round-up

The Notre Dame Club of Omaha is ramping up its slate of activities this summer.  We are currently hosting two summer service project students (more about them in an upcoming post) and the annual dinner for Universal Notre Dame night will be held next week.  See below for more details on recent and upcoming events.

Hesburgh Month of Service

On May 19, around 20 volunteers went to the Jesuit Academy camp to help clean and prepare the site for students arriving in June for their summer session.  Over the course of 4 hours, club volunteers moved 15 tons of gravel,  cleaned two rooms with 20 bunks apiece, weeded and raked an outdoor amphitheater, and expertly trimmed one long row hedges.  Volunteers included graduates of all ages and even some current students back for the summer.   All the workers took a lunch break around noon and caught up on the latest news and trends at ND.  Fr. Tom, president of Jesuit Academy, thanked all the volunteers and mentioned Fr. Hesburgh’s book (“God Country, Notre Dame”) as a source of inspiration for him becoming a priest.  If you are interested in volunteering more with Jesuit Academy, please contact Fr. Tom through the Jesuit Academy website (www.jesuitacademy.org).

Ara Parseghian Foundation Ride

This weekend, College of Science Dean, Greg Crawford will be arriving in Omaha as part of a cross country bike ride to benefit the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation.  The ride is focused on raising awareness for Niemann-Pick Type C disease, which primarily afflicts the nervous systems of children and adolescents.  Crawford will be arriving in Omaha on June 4 and be hosted by a small group of club officers.  If you’d like to learn more or donate to this cause go to Crawfords blog at http://blogs.nd.edu/gregcrawford.

UND Night

Omaha’s Universal Notre Dame Night will be held next Thursday, June 7 at Field Club Omaha.  This year’s speaker is Chief of Staff to the President, Ann Firth.  Alumni Dennis Murphy will also be honored as the club’s Person of the Year.  Cocktail hour starts at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at 7:00.  If you are still interested in attending, please contact club president Ed Murphy at the link in the right sidebar.
